ATASC Commemorates Mustafa Kemal Atatürk | Nov. 10 2011

Posted by on November 10, 2011 at 08:19 am

ATASC commemorates Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, on the 73rd anniversary of his death.

Atatürk and his principles will live in our hearts forever…

ATATÜRK’Ü GÖRDÜM DÜŞÜMDE

Sizler yaşadıkça çocuklarım

Ben de yaşıyorum demek,
İşte aranızdayım Ahmetler, Mehmetler’le,
Sizler yaşadıkça çocuklarım
Elele
Yanınızdayım

Sizler yaşadıkça çocuklarım
Daha ferah içim,
Gök daha geniş denizler daha geniş,
Vatan ya vatan,
Vatan sonsuzluktan gelmiş
Sonsuzluğa açılan yol
Vatan siz.

Sizler yaşadıkça çocuklarım
Bilin ki
Ben de yaşarım,
Bir sevinç düştü mü içinize
Bir keder düştü mü içinize
Bilin ki
Aranızda ben varım.

ATASC LAUNCHES “THE VAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF CAMPAIGN”

Posted by on November 8, 2011 at 22:16 pm

The Association of Turkish Americans of Southern California (ATASC) has launched the “Van Earthquake Relief Campaign” to raise funds for the Türk Kızılayı (Turkish Red Crescent), a relief organization which is helping victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Turkey.

On October 23, 2011, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit eastern parts of Turkey, with an epicenter at approximately 30 kilometers north of the city of Van. The deadly quake occurred on Sunday afternoon and lasted 25 seconds. Provincial capital Van, with a population of 380,000, and the eastern city of Ercis were the worst affected. Nearly 500 people were killed, more than 1,300 were injured. The death count is likely to rise further as many people are still missing and 2,262 buildings have collapsed.

On behalf of the Turkish-American community members, we offer our deepest condolences to the families, who lost their loved ones in this disaster. Our thoughts and sympathies are with them, and we also wish a rapid recovery and rebuilding for those who were injured or lost their homes.

We appeal to diverse communities across Southern California to join in our efforts to assist the victims of the quake in getting access to the much needed services in the coming harsh winter months. ATASC fund will initially support the Turkish Red Crescent, working diligently to provide disaster relief. Over time, the fund may transition to support long-term recovery efforts.

Please consider contributing to our campaign by donating online by clicking on the “DONATE” button on the left.  Please specify Kizilay in the “memo” space since we  also have a campaign for Mehmetcik Fund to help the victims of the PKK terror.

Alternatively you can  send a check to “ATASC” with Kızılay (or Turkish Red Crescent) in the memo section to the address below:

ATATURK’s Corner

Ataturk dedicated 23 Nisan, the anniversary of the Turkish National Congress in 1920 to Children. His vision was:

FUTURE BELONGS TO AND IS PROTECTED BY FUTURE GENERATIONS

He expressed it best when he addressed Turkish Youth:

"O Turkish Youth! Your first and foremost duty is to defend and protect the Turkish independence and the Turkish Republic for all eternity. All the mighty strength that you will need exists in the noble blood a-flowing in your veins!."

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

ATASC SCHOOL IN IZMIT, TURKEY

ARSLANBEY ATA-SC OKULU
On August 17, 1999, western Turkey was struck by a devastating magnitude-7.4 earthquake. Many thousands of people were killed, and many more made homeless by the quake that was centered near Izmit. Contributing to the rebuilding process, ATASC initiated an effort in February 2003 to build a new school for the children of Izmit. The school admitted its first class on September 13, 2004. ATASC still continues to support its namesake school.
Since 2006, ATASC sponsored 13 needy children, helped send 6 children to Space Camp Izmir, opened up a Computer Lab and a Science Lab. Most recently ATASC helped the school to open up a pre-school by furnishing four pre-school classrooms named for ATASC chapters. VATAN Chapter is currently in the process of furnishing a conference salon for the students of the elementary school.
