Turkish-American Community Hosts Ramadan Holiday Dinner for the Homeless in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA, Saturday July 18, 2015 starting 4.30 pm

As the end of the religious holiday – Ramadan – draws near, the Turkish American Association – Southern California Chapter will provide dinner to over 500 homeless community members of Los Angeles’ skid row on Saturday, July 18th.  The effort is being organized in collaboration with the Los Angeles Mission’s Adopt-A-Meal program.  ATA-SC is an organization committed to representing Turkish American culture in Southern California.  Ramadan is a holiday that is very important to the Turkish Americans, who are excited to give back to the community during this season here in Los Angeles.  The Los Angeles Mission is founded to provide help, hope and opportunity to men, women and children in need. There are nearly 50,000 homeless individuals currently living in Los Angeles; the Los Angeles Mission serves 1,500 meals daily to this population.  Their innovative Adopt-A-Meal program allows civic-minded community groups – such as ATASC – to prepare the dining room and have their nearly dozen Turkish-American volunteers serve the dinner for approximately 500 Mission guests. It is truly a community-building event that cuts across religious, ethnic, social and economica barriers to truly foster a sense of giving and grace in this solemn holiday season for the Muslim community.

This event will be the first of its kind for ATASC; the group plans to continue to fundraise for this purpose and make this an annual event. The ATASC Board President, Ms. Burcu Tansu, likens the event’s meaning to what Americans feel onThanksgiving, noting it is, “…like a Turkish Thanksgiving.  We are grateful for what we have and want to help those less fortunate during this time [Ramadan].”
